This is a new category I'm starting, the Top 12 Something. Twelve is a beautiful number which base has survived history through the measurement of time and counting on our hands. It even has its own unique word unlike the combinatory names for higher numbers. For some applications it is much more useful than ten. And I'm extending it to the famous top lists.
There are many sub-genres in Adventure gaming, so I had to seperate this into 4 groups. They all share a deep feeling of adventure when playing, be it through exploring the unknown or finding a way out of a situation. These sub-genres just define the tempo and playstyle. I'll pick 3 from each creating a diverse top 12 where each has a unique experience.
Also known as point-and-click or classic adventures. I love these games for their combination of storytelling and finding the right way to go to the next area.
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- eXperience 112
- The Dig
- The Myst series
These adventure games are mostly oriented to puzzling your way out. I picked the ones with the best storylines.
- The Room
- Portal 1 & 2
- Mind: Path to Thalamus
- Mirror's Edge
Action based games with combat-focussed gameplay. Most of the times they incorporate RPG like abilities and options. They make it into the adventure genre by having a good story or setting, which is fun to explore or become a part of.
- Mass Effect series
- L.A. Noire
- Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
- Mars: War Logs
These are the types of adventures that play like reading a novel. They often have light interaction and focus on enjoyment and feeling like you're in another world.
- Heavy Rain
- The Banner Sage
- Verde Station
- Knights of Dragon Pass
